The drone was part of an overnight Russian attack on Ukraine and struck the roof of an apartment building in Galați, according to the Romanian Defense Ministry. The impact sparked a fire. Two people suffered minor injuries, and several others were evacuated.

Romania, a NATO member, subsequently called on the alliance to accelerate the delivery of anti-drone defense systems. The Foreign Ministry described the drone flight as a serious violation of international law. Deputy Chief of the General Staff, General Gheorghe Maxim, said at a press conference that the incident was not an attack by Russia on Romania, but that Romanians must understand that Russia poses a threat to the security of countries in the region.

Since the start of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine in February 2022, Romania has repeatedly found drone fragments on its territory, including in Galați in April this year. However, no one had been injured before, as most debris fell in remote areas. The Ukrainian Air Force said it shot down 217 of 232 Russian drones and one ballistic missile overnight. Hits were recorded in 14 regions.
