Pharmacy reform passes Bundesrat: New services allowed

The Bundesrat has approved the pharmacy reform proposed by the black-red coalition. According to the Abendzeitung München, pharmacies will be allowed to offer more services, including vaccinations, preventive check-ups, and, in certain cases, dispensing prescription-only medications without a prescription.

The reform allows pharmacies to offer new preventive and early detection services, such as for cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and smoking cessation. In addition to flu and COVID-19 vaccinations, all immunizations using inactivated vaccines, such as tetanus, will be permitted.

Blood draws will also be allowed, for instance to monitor the effects of medications. Furthermore, pharmacies may dispense medicines without a doctor’s prescription if the medication has been taken for a long time and a therapy delay is not possible. In such cases, the smallest pack may be dispensed once against self-payment.

The Bundestag had already passed the reform. The report is based on a dpa release published by the Abendzeitung München.
