The incident occurred early in the morning at around 7:45 a.m. local time. The attacker first fired at several people and then retreated into a building, where he later killed himself. Police deployed around 100 officers and a SWAT team to search the area. A robot and a drone helped locate the suspect, who was not found until hours later and was pronounced dead around noon.
Midland Memorial Hospital announced on Facebook that nine injured people had been admitted. Four of them required surgery, while five have since been discharged. Another victim was taken to a different hospital, according to News. Authorities called on the public to donate blood. It remains unclear whether any police officers were injured during the operation.
Texas Greg Abbott said on social media that he had been briefed on the incident and praised the rapid response of emergency services. “We pray for the victims, their families, and the entire community,” Abbott wrote. Midland is located about 330 miles west of Dallas. Just days earlier, several people were injured by gunfire at a summer festival in Toledo, Ohio.
