Negotiations between the United States and Iran over a potential peace agreement are fraught with numerous challenges. Despite growing hopes for a deal that could end the war in the Middle East, the situation remains tense. According to Tagesspiegel, US forces have shot down several Iranian drones that posed a threat to civilian shipping.
US Donald Trump has warned Iran against further drone attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz. Such drone strikes could significantly burden the talks. The US Central Command has also reported patrol flights by fighter jets in the Middle East to monitor the situation.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) have, according to insiders, already released more than three billion dollars to Iran, aiming to reduce tensions. In total, the UAE may have pledged payments of ten to twenty billion dollars to persuade the Islamic Republic to halt its attacks on the Gulf state.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghtschi has stressed that the management of the Strait of Hormuz will not return to the status it had before the war. He stated that Iran will ensure safe passage for ships transiting the strait. However, observers warn that Iran might impose high fees for passage, which could lead to higher oil prices on global markets.
Talks to end the war between the US and Israel on one side and Iran on the other are in full swing. Araghtschi has made clear, however, that the memorandum of understanding with the US has not yet been signed and changes are possible. An end to the war on all fronts, including Lebanon, is being sought.
A senior US government official in Washington has stated that the US is 80 to 85 percent confident that a peace agreement with Iran will be signed in the coming days. This agreement would include a significant easing of sanctions and the release of frozen Iranian assets.
In return, Tehran would agree to dismantle its nuclear program and hand over its nuclear material. However, a specific location and date for the possible signing of the agreement have not yet been set. Europe could come into play as a possible venue for the signing.
Developments in the Middle East are of great importance to the international community, as they could have far-reaching implications for stability in the region and beyond. The negotiations between the US and Iran are therefore central to geopolitical relations in the Middle East.
