Sweden’s air force scrambled its JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets twice on Friday, June 12, to intercept and escort Russian military aircraft over the Baltic Sea. According to the Kyiv Post, citing the Swedish Armed Forces, the two separate missions involved a Su-24 and a Su-34.
The Swedish Armed Forces said on X that air surveillance radars had detected unidentified aircraft in international airspace near Sweden’s borders. Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) teams launched two separate interception sorties. Gripen pilots visually identified the Russian planes and escorted them along the border zone.
The Swedish Armed Forces stressed that the Russian aircraft did not enter Swedish airspace. “There was no violation of the country’s airspace,” the statement said. “The fighter jets’ actions were aimed at protecting our airspace and monitoring activities near Sweden’s borders.”
