The financing plan for the Braunschweig team’s first-division license is in place and was submitted to the BBL on time. “We have submitted our application,” Löwen managing director Nils Mittmann confirmed to NDR. “Now we are looking forward positively and planning accordingly for the Basketball Bundesliga.”

The Löwen finished the past season in 17th place and were thus relegated on sporting merit. On the final matchday, they defeated Chemnitz 104-90 and moved past Heidelberg in the standings. A spot in the top flight became available because second-division club Kirchheim Knights did not apply for a first-division license. The BBL decided to award this spot via a wildcard – at a price of €800,000.

Braunschweig and Heidelberg expressed interest. As the second-to-last team in the standings, Braunschweig has a right of first refusal over Heidelberg. The sum was raised over the past few days with the help of partners, sponsors, and a fan campaign. Whether the Lower Saxony team actually receives the playing rights will be decided by the shareholders’ meeting of GmbH.
