According to the FAZ, the auction house Ketterer in Munich achieved an outstanding result with Wassily Kandinsky’s painting ‘Villa Seeburg am Staffelsee’. The hammer fell at €4.4 million after several telephone bidders competed for the work. The estimate had been between two and three million euros.
The color-sparkling painting was the top lot of the anniversary auction marking the house’s 80th anniversary. It was only recently identified as Kandinsky’s work based on a sketched list of works he had prepared for exhibitions. Previously, it had been in the collections of Nell and Herwarth Walden and Oskar Kirchner.
The buyer comes from Switzerland, as Robert Ketterer announced. The painting now belongs to a Swiss collection.
