According to Euronews, Den Gamle By received the award for setting new standards in innovation, relevance and audience impact. EMYA co-chair Daniëlle Kuijten praised the museum as “a pioneering institution that brings together historical and contemporary urban spaces to address pressing issues of our time – from migration to sustainability to social justice.”
The open-air museum on urban history invites visitors to explore 400 years of history through interactive exhibits – from 1600 to 2014. A key focus is on environmental issues: the jury recognized its work with heritage plant varieties, gardening courses, and repair workshops for clothing and buildings. Volunteers play a central role, contributing expertise and personal experience.
