The Israeli air force attacked suburbs of Beirut after the Lebanese Hezbollah had previously shelled Israeli territory. In a joint statement, Benjamin Netanyahu and Israel Katz said the strikes targeted what they called “terror targets” of Hezbollah in the southern suburb of Dahieh. The Lebanese civil defense reported at least three dead and six wounded from the airstrikes.
Witnesses reported that the targeted building housed a Hezbollah office. Lebanese sources said Israel had again targeted a commander of the Islamist militia. These attacks are part of an escalation between Israel and Hezbollah that has increased in recent weeks.
In response to the attacks, Iran’s chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf expressed doubts about talks with the US on an agreement regarding the Iran war. He said on platform X that it was pointless to continue discussing negotiations if the US was unable to meet its commitments. Ghalibaf pointed out that the Israeli attacks showed that the US either did not want to or could not keep its promises.
Israel’s Foreign Ministry rejected Iran’s accusations and accused Hezbollah of attacking Israel unprovoked. In an X post, the ministry said Israel would not tolerate attacks on its territory. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard threatened Israel with retaliation, stressing that the crimes would not go unanswered.
The situation between Israel and Hezbollah has intensified in recent days, particularly after an Israeli attack on Beirut that triggered mutual attacks between Iran and Israel for the first time since a ceasefire began. Iran makes an agreement with the US conditional on a comprehensive ceasefire in Lebanon, among other things.
