According to Zeit, participants of a “No G7” demonstration in Geneva attacked a United Nations building with stones and flares. Swiss police used tear gas against the attackers. The protest march is directed against the meeting of the seven leading industrial nations, which begins Monday in neighboring Évian, France.

Organizers spoke of tens of thousands of participants in the afternoon. The march initially remained peaceful, with many placards targeting US Donald Trump. Police held back for a long time. Fearing riots, numerous shops and hotels had secured their windows with wooden boards. During the rally, individual demonstrators tore off the plywood boards, smashed windows of a bank and a moped shop. A Tesla caught fire near the bus station.

The “No G7” alliance brings together around 60 groups, including feminist organizations, anti-fascist groups, trade unions, and a so-called revolutionary bloc. The Geneva city administration stated that France had not authorized protests against the summit, which is why the demonstration is taking place in Switzerland. The heads of state and government of the G7 and the five guest countries will also arrive in Geneva and travel on to Évian from there.
