In a joint statement, German Friedrich Merz, French Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Giorgia Meloni stressed the need to restore passage through the Strait of Hormuz as quickly as possible. The goal is an “unconditional and unrestricted freedom of navigation,” according to the text distributed by the dpa news agency.
The four countries are prepared to “do everything in their power to achieve this goal – in line with their constitutional requirements – in particular through a purely defensive and independent mission to secure merchant shipping and carry out mine clearance operations.” The leaders described the situation as an opportunity to stabilize the region and the global economy.
Even before the announcement of the US-Iranian agreement, Germany and its European partners had signaled their general readiness for a safe opening of the waterway after an end to all hostilities. At the same time, the four governments reaffirmed that Iran must under no circumstances acquire nuclear weapons. “It is now of the utmost importance to conclude the detailed negotiations and to implement this agreement quickly and fully,” the statement said.
