The G7 summit in Évian-les-Bains has begun under the shadow of heavy Russian attacks on Ukraine. Overnight into Monday, missiles struck the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, setting the famous Kyiv Pechersk Lavra (Kyiv Monastery of the Caves) on fire. The monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

French Emmanuel Macron, host of the summit, condemned the attack on platform X. “Nothing justifies this attack on our universal heritage,” Macron wrote. France is ready to work with Ukrainian authorities to protect cultural heritage. The attack only strengthens the resolve to work with allies toward a ceasefire that Russia continues to stubbornly refuse.

The G7 leaders plan to discuss the most pressing issues in Évian: Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, the situation in the Gaza Strip, and Iran’s nuclear program. Macron hopes that former US Donald Trump, considered an unpredictable summit participant, will stay for the entire three-day event and not leave early.
