UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced a nationwide social media ban for under-16s. According to The Guardian, the regulation is set to come into force next spring. Starmer justified the move by citing the negative impact of social media on children, saying it makes them unhappy and unsafe.
Starmer acknowledged that some teenagers would circumvent the restrictions. Nevertheless, he stressed that the rules are not pointless. He called for resistance against a ‘learned helplessness’ and urged reclaiming agency over social media.
The announcement is part of a broader UK strategy to protect minors in the digital space. Britain had already introduced strict requirements for platforms under the Online Safety Act. The planned ban goes a step further, covering all social networks, including TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat.
