The revue ‘Mokka-Hits and Milchbar Dreams’ at the Komische Oper Berlin brings the GDR back to life musically. Director Axel Ranisch and composer Adam Benzwi have packaged East German history into songs that take the audience back to the era of the Mokka Milch Bar on Karl-Marx-Allee. The lead roles are played by acting stars Gisa Flake and Thorsten Merten.
The real Mokka Milch Bar, once a cult restaurant in East Berlin, had reopened in May after a long renovation – but the rush and technical problems quickly led to another closure. The revue picks up on these and other stories, combining them with a catchy soundtrack. The production is a homage to East German pop culture without glossing over the dark sides of the dictatorship.
