Giacomo Puccini’s opera “Tosca” premiered on Friday at the Theater Lübeck. The production tells the timeless story of love, jealousy, and betrayal as a gripping psychological thriller, according to NDR. The action takes place within 24 hours in June 1800 in Rome at historic locations such as the Church of Sant’Andrea della Valle and the Castel Sant’Angelo.

Lead singer Konstantinos Klironomos, who plays the painter Mario Cavaradossi, described the piece as a “real political thriller.” He prepares physically with vocal exercises and Tai Chi. His partner Evmorfia Metaxaki, who plays the singer Floria Tosca, praised the timelessness of the work: “The piece is one hundred percent current. Love, jealousy – it’s a pure crime story.” Both singers come from Greece and often switch to their native language in conversation, which facilitates collaboration.

Further performances of “Tosca” are scheduled for Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Friday, June 26, at 7:30 p.m. at the Theater Lübeck.
