The incident occurred about 20 nautical miles south of the Isle of Wight, outside British territorial waters. The small, engineless yacht had departed from Britain and, due to poor visibility, drifted near the Admiral Grigorovich, the BBC reported.

The Russian frigate first issued an acoustic warning signal to urge the sailboat to change course. When that failed, the crew fired warning shots from about 500 yards (457 meters) away. No injuries or damage to the yacht were reported.

A spokesman for the British Ministry of Defence said: “We are investigating reports of an incident in the English Channel.” British authorities were informed of the shots by the yacht’s occupants.
