The incident occurred about 42 kilometers off the coast of the Isle of Wight. The couple was sailing under the British flag when they approached the Russian frigate 'Admiral Grigorovich'.

The warship first gave five horn signals, meaning ‘Do you see us?’, Jane Kelvie told Newsnight. The couple then turned two degrees to starboard to show they had deliberately changed course. About a minute later, five more signals sounded, immediately followed by four or five shots from a firearm. ‘They were not aimed at us – they were warning shots into the air, as we believe,’ Kelvie said.

The British Ministry of Defense described the incident as a ‘separate incident’ unrelated to the seizure of a tanker from Russia’s shadow fleet on Sunday. Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed the yacht had dangerously approached the warship. The Kelvies deny this, saying they were ‘definitely not on a collision course’.
