The security situation in Frankfurt’s train station district and around the main train station has been a concern for the city for years. Now, Mayor Mike Josef (SPD) has announced a ‘train station district summit,’ to which the state of Hesse will also be invited for a special meeting. The goal is to redefine the guidelines of regional drug policy and improve the quality of stay in the district.
Just a few days ago, several authorities signed a new security agreement for the main train station and surrounding stations. The 14-page agreement provides for closer cooperation between federal and state police, more checks, and more consistent enforcement of the weapons ban. The use of AI-supported video surveillance to detect dangerous objects is also planned, as Interior Minister Roman Poseck (CDU) announced.
The last public order agreement for the train station district dates back to 2002. Josef emphasized that they want to improve the situation ‘day by day.’ The planned summit is now intended to go beyond pure security policy and address drug policy as a central issue.
