The affected freelancers are primarily those who worked for the shows “Mittagsmagazin” and “MDR um 2,” which were canceled or reduced in May. Anyone who suffers a loss of income between April 2026 and March 2027 will receive compensation based on their 2025 earnings. The amount depends on length of service: more than 20 years gets 90 percent, 10 to 19 years gets 85 percent, and less than 10 years gets 80 percent of their pay.
The arrangement is controversial because MDR is supposed to be cutting costs and is largely funded by broadcasting fees. In 2024, the broadcaster reported a deficit of 44 million euros: revenues were 774 million euros, while expenses were 818 million euros. The MDR state treaty requires economic efficiency and thrift. Yet the payments will still be made even if freelancers are not used at all or much less.
“FAZ” and “Bild” describe it as pay for “doing nothing.” Former ARD editor Alexander Teske criticized in “Bild” that MDR is cutting beloved shows like “Tatort” and “Polizeiruf 110” to stir up public protest against politicians who reject higher fees. He said there are many savings opportunities that broadcasters are not using out of self-interest.
