In East Rutherford, New Jersey, Mbappé scored in the 66th minute from a Michael Olise assist and added a stunning strike in stoppage time (90+6). The 27-year-old’s 57th and 58th international goals moved him past Olivier Giroud as France’s sole record scorer. Bradley Barcola (82nd minute) had made it 2-0 before Ibrahim Mbaye (90+5) pulled one back for Senegal.

Didier Deschamps’ side avenged their opening defeat to the same opponent at the 2002 World Cup. Mbappé said after the match: “I don’t think we’re really firing on all cylinders yet. But it’s great to start the tournament like this. It gives you a bit more peace of mind.”

Ahead of Monday’s second group game against Iraq, France are in a strong position to reach the round of 32. The tournament ends on July 19 with the final in New York.
