As part of its so-called quality offensive, the company is renewing tracks, switches, overhead lines, stations, and bridges. Long-distance and freight trains are being rerouted, while regional services are replaced by buses and limited train services on sections of the route.
Construction work has been underway since early May and is scheduled to last until July 10. Until now, the section between Celle and Hanover was primarily affected. Now, regional trains between Uelzen and Lüneburg will also be suspended until the end of the quality offensive. Instead, hourly buses are to run between Lüneburg and Uelzen. Additional trains are planned between Lüneburg and Hamburg during peak hours.
Deutsche Bahn aims to renew and repair tracks, switches, overhead lines, stations, and bridges along the roughly 163-kilometer route. Work is also being carried out on signal boxes and the railway embankment near Eschede. According to Deutsche Bahn, the work on the rail infrastructure is on schedule overall. The Hamburg-Hanover connection is one of the most heavily used railway lines in Germany. With the quality offensive, Deutsche Bahn intends to bundle urgent work ahead of a comprehensive renovation planned for 2029.
