The jury praised Haifisch’s picture book as a reinterpretation of the classic fable of the ant and the grasshopper. The story of the cricket that makes music all summer and doesn’t think about winter is one of the best-known fables of all time. Haifisch brings the original text into the present with a laconic narrative style, pointed humor, and a graphic style far from the mainstream, the jury said.

The award has been given every two years since 1984 by the city of Hameln for outstanding fairy tale and legend books as well as fantastic stories for children and young people. The award ceremony will take place on November 13 at the Theater. Haifisch, born in Leipzig in 1986, studied at the Academy of Fine Leipzig and is considered by the city to be one of the most important figures in independent comics worldwide.
