The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued an official heat warning for large parts of southwestern Germany. Meteorologists expect the hottest days of the year so far.

The warning applies on Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. for Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, and parts of North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse, and Bavaria. Very warm to hot air is flowing into Germany from the southwest, the DWD announced. As a result, most other regions can also expect strong to very strong heat stress.

Temperatures had already exceeded the 30-degree mark in many places, especially in the south, on Wednesday. The highest reading of the day was measured at more than 32 degrees Celsius in Müllheim (southern Baden) – a preliminary value. DWD meteorologist Marcel Schmid advised in a YouTube video to avoid direct midday and afternoon heat, keep apartments cool, and also keep the body cool.

Hospitals are sounding the alarm because of the heat. Gerald Gaß, chairman of the German Hospital Association, warned of the consequences for patients and staff. If the planned cuts by the Federal Ministry of Health are implemented, cooled hospitals would remain “illusory,” Gaß told the Rheinische Post. He called for additional funds for cooling clinics.
