Early in the show, Dave Grohl promised the roughly 70,000 fans in the nearly sold-out Allianz Arena: “We’ll give you three hours of rock ‘n’ roll, motherfuckers!” And the frontman kept his word – the concert ended after three hours with the song “Everlong.” Earlier, the band took a technical glitch in stride: Grohl’s guitar malfunctioned because a button was stuck. “We’re still a garage band,” he joked after a roadie fixed the issue.
The first act ended with “No Son of Mine,” into which the band wove a small homage to Motörhead with a snippet of “Ace of Spades.” Grohl asked for applause for the late Lemmy Kilmister as the crew prepared the small stage for the acoustic set. This began with “Wheels” – a song that, according to Grohl, only German fans can sing along to. The arena turned into a sea of light from phone flashlights.
From the third song, “Times Like These,” the sound engineering delivered an excellent mix of guitars, bass, drums, and keyboard. Grohl looked up at the clear night sky over Munich and dedicated “Aurora” to the late drummer Taylor Hawkins.
