Unusual blue marine creatures have appeared at several beaches along the Welsh coast in recent days. According to the BBC, they are Velella velella, also known as ‘sailors’. Witnesses describe the animals as fascinating and bright blue.
Marine biologists are currently discussing whether the cnidarians could be poisonous to humans. Velella velella is usually harmless, but mass strandings can cause skin irritation. The exact reason for the sudden appearance of the animals remains unclear.
