The accident happened around 1:40 a.m. on a railway bridge in Munich’s Milbertshofen district. For reasons still unknown, two freight trains collided on the bridge, causing two cars to fall about five meters onto Schleißheimer Straße. Police confirmed one fatality and are on site with a large-scale operation.

“That two trains collide and fall off a bridge – unbelievable,” a fire department spokesperson said. According to police, the cars were empty, so there was no danger to the public. Recovery of the cars has begun; how long it will take is still unclear.

The cause of the accident and the extent of the damage remain under investigation. A railway spokesperson said the accident occurred on a line used exclusively by freight trains, so there are no disruptions to regional or long-distance passenger services. Police said the accident site could remain closed until next Sunday.
