Amazon halts film project about OpenAI Sam Altman

Amazon has stopped a film project about OpenAI Sam Altman that was to be directed by Luca Guadagnino. The reason is the company's business ties with OpenAI, as reported by Heise.

The film, titled “Artificial,” is a mix of drama and comedy centered on Altman’s surprise firing and reinstatement as OpenAI CEO in late 2023. Andrew Garfield plays Altman, and according to the film database IMDb, Elon Musk is also set to appear (played by Ike Barinholtz). The project was so far along that initial test screenings had already taken place, according to industry outlet Variety, citing a participant.

An Amazon spokesperson told media: “We believe ‘Artificial’ would be better served if released by another studio, and we are working closely with the film team to find a new distributor for the film.” Amazon said it has great respect for Guadagnino and wants to continue working with him. The film’s cancellation follows the announcement of a major partnership between Amazon Web Services (AWS) and OpenAI to deliver scalable AI agents and applications for customers. Amazon has pledged $50 billion in OpenAI’s latest funding round, contingent on an IPO or the achievement of general artificial intelligence.
