The incident occurred on Sunday evening during the start-up of operations at the Ras Laffan industrial complex, QatarEnergy said. Firefighters have since brought the blaze under control. According to Qatar’s Interior Ministry, it was a “technical malfunction” and there was no gas leak threatening public safety.
Rescue teams are still searching for the 18 missing persons. Qatar’s international search and rescue group is working together with civil defense units. QatarEnergy initially provided no information on possible damage to the facility, which supplies the emirate with natural gas for the domestic market.
