The renovation of the former crane factory in Hamburg is the most extensive overhaul since its founding. For over 40 years, Kampnagel has served as a venue for contemporary art; now its infrastructure and technology are being brought up to date. Construction is scheduled to take four years, with costs totaling €168 million.
The venue will remain open during the construction phase. The largest hall, K6, with over 800 seats, will continue to host performances, and an additional hall is to be built. Artistic director Amelie Deuflhard described the project as “open-heart surgery.” The curatorial team decided from the outset not to close or move to an alternative venue. Instead, the construction site itself will become a stage – under the motto “Under Creation. The Show Goes On.”
The opening of the 2026/2027 season features, among others, Portuguese artist Marco da Silva Ferreira with “F*ucking Future,” as well as international artists such as Göksu Kunak, Stefan Kaegi, and Daniel Dominguez Teruel. A central project is “Key To The City” by New York artist Paul Ramírez Jonas: up to 15,000 Hamburg residents will receive a key granting access to normally locked places, turning the city itself into a stage.
