Around 9:45 p.m., parts of the city center lost power, according to Stadtwerke Kiel. The outage affected not only more than 1,000 households but also areas of the Kiel Week, as utility spokesman Sönke Schuster told NDR. Among other places, the Schlossgarten and the Wall went dark. Stalls in the affected areas then closed, as operators did not expect the power to return. They could have stayed open until midnight.
The repair team was still out late Tuesday evening searching for the fault. Although they located it shortly afterward, reconnecting proved difficult. Power was not restored until around 1:15 a.m. The cause was found in the morning: a defective plug between two cables. It is expected to be repaired during the day.
Parallel to the power outage, a nationwide IT failure at Deutsche Bahn brought train traffic to a standstill. Around 10:30 p.m., almost nothing was moving in long-distance and regional services. At Kiel’s main station, at least 150 people were stranded, according to a city spokesperson. The city allowed several stall operators near the station to stay open longer so travelers could get food and drinks. The federal police reported a peaceful atmosphere with no disturbances. The first trains were able to run again around 12:25 a.m. The cause of the disruption was a failure of a radio system, which has since been fixed.
