The so-called “Alaska agreement” refers to Moscow’s demand that Washington push Kyiv to fully withdraw from the Donbas – a territory currently under Ukrainian control. Kyiv, this is unacceptable, a source familiar with the Alaska talks told the Kyiv Independent.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio made clear on June 25 that no final deal was reached in Anchorage. “There was no agreement in Alaska. There was a proposal, but no agreement,” Rubio said. “If there had been an agreement, the war would be over.” On the same day, Trump praised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky: he is doing “pretty well” in the war and Ukraine is “winning right now” – a reference to large-scale drone attacks on Moscow.
A G7 representative told Axios that Trump is “skeptical about everything concerning Putin” and has spoken about putting pressure on Russia. Other leaders did not believe he would actually take action. Russian officials have accused Washington of failing to honor the alleged promises from Alaska – a sign of growing unease in the Kremlin over the US position on the war.
