Vucic did not give a specific date for his resignation or the dissolution of parliament. However, he said he would actively support his party, the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), in the election campaign.

The announcement follows about a year and a half of student-led anti-corruption protests. The trigger was the collapse of a canopy at a railway station in Novi Sad in 2024, which killed 16 people.

Vucic’s second and final term would have regularly ended in mid-2027, and the parliamentary elections would have been scheduled for 2027 as well.
