The Sterbehilfe Verein is considering legal action for damages against the heirs of its co-founder Roger Kusch. At a general meeting in Hamburg, the vast majority of attending members voted against discharging the association’s board under Kusch. According to the new board, the sums involved amount to tens of thousands of euros that Roger Kusch allegedly used without authorization.

Hamburg Justice Senator Roger Kusch (CDU) took his own life shortly after being voted out as president of the association at the end of May. The deep rift within the association only became public after his removal. A board member reports that legal disputes with Kusch forced the association to pay 400,000 euros in legal fees.

The ‘Hamburger Abendblatt’ reports, among other things, that Kusch had an apartment in St. Georg renovated at the association’s expense. In this way, the euthanasia association is trying to recover the money from Kusch’s heirs. At the meeting at the Radisson Hotel am Dammtor, the course of the new board under President Goßmann was largely supported, but it also became clear that the new leadership must win back the trust of members.

Some members see Kusch’s suicide as a direct consequence of the events and hold Goßmann partly responsible. Although the press code urges restraint in reporting on suicides, the death of the former justice senator is considered a matter of public interest. He died at the age of 71.
