The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said it bombed ten targets in Iran overnight Saturday, including military equipment, communication systems, air defenses, and drone storage facilities. The attack was a response to an Iranian drone strike on the Panama-flagged tanker M/T Kiku in the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday.
Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social that the US had responded to Iran’s “repeated violations” of the ceasefire. He threatened: “If this continues, the Islamic Republic of Iran will no longer exist.” Iran reacted swiftly: the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it attacked US bases in Kuwait and Bahrain, destroying “eight important objects of US military infrastructure.” The IRGC announced that US bases in the region would experience “hell” in the coming days.
Only on June 17, the US and Iran signed a 14-point memorandum that, among other things, provides for the safe passage of merchant ships through the Strait of Hormuz. Both sides now accuse each other of breaking the agreement. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most important waterways for global oil and gas transport; its blockade had recently driven up oil prices.
