Lena Schätte wins Ingeborg Bachmann Prize 2025 in Klagenfurt

German author Lena Schätte has won the prestigious Ingeborg Bachmann Prize. The jury awarded her the prize on Sunday in Klagenfurt for her text 'What We Carry.'

Schätte, born in 1993 in Lüdenscheid, prevailed against 13 competitors at the 50th Days of German-Language Literature. Her text ‘What We Carry’ depicts the experiences of an overweight woman and a school friendship among outsiders.

Schätte, who made her debut in 2014 with the novel ‘Ruhrpottliebe’ and worked as a psychiatric nurse in the Ruhr region, studied at the German Literature Institute in Leipzig. Her novel ‘The Black on My Father’s Hands’ was published in 2025 and has received multiple awards. In Klagenfurt, she also won the BKS Audience Prize (10,000 euros), determined by online voting.

In addition to the main prize, other awards were presented. The Kelag Prize of 15,000 euros went to Kinga Tóth, born in 1983 in Sárvár, Hungary, for her text ‘OstblockMädl.’ Ozan Zakariya Keskinkılıç won the Deutschlandfunk Prize (12,500 euros). The 3sat Prize (7,500 euros) was awarded to Magdalena Schrefel, born in 1984 in Korneuburg, Austria, for her text about a forty-year-old woman receiving a breast cancer diagnosis.

The Ingeborg Bachmann Prize has been awarded annually in Klagenfurt since 1977. It commemorates the Austrian lyric poet Ingeborg Bachmann.
