In Nuremberg, all tram lines are affected. Operator VAG announced on its website that no trams can run for the time being. Replacement bus services have been set up. Operations are expected to resume in sections from Monday afternoon at the earliest, with lines 4 and 10 likely not running until midnight. VAG explained that the road surface had softened in some places due to the extreme heat, making safe operation impossible.
In Leipzig, the high temperatures also caused problems. The joint compound between asphalt and concrete seeped into switches and tracks, where it clumped. Employees of the Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe (LVB) worked frantically to clean the switches and free the trams. On Monday morning, no trams were running yet. An LVB spokesperson told dpa that they were trying to set up a skeleton network so that the first trams could run during the day. Regular service, however, is not possible. Buses are to run on schedule as far as possible.
In Würzburg, where services had also been suspended in two districts due to heat damage, trams were running on schedule again on Monday morning.
