The victims of the explosion were Ukrainian-born businessman Vadym Yermolayev, his wife, and their 13-year-old child, as The Guardian reports. Yermolayev and his wife suffered serious injuries; the child was also injured. According to authorities, the wife is in a life-threatening condition, the man is no longer in such danger, and the child is not in critical condition.
The bomb exploded shortly before 9 p.m. on Monday in the lobby of a residential building. Police assume an attempted assassination after initial investigations ruled out a terrorist motive. The perpetrator fled to neighboring France. Monaco is bordered by the sea on one side and by France on the others; there are no border controls between the two countries.
Yermolayev is from the southeastern Ukrainian city of Dnipro and founded the Alef trade and industrial conglomerate. He is considered one of the most influential real estate developers and businessmen in the region. Albert II of Monaco called the act an “abominable crime” and a “shock for the entire Monegasque community.”
