A local resident discovered the debris on June 29 and alerted the authorities. Experts from the ministry and other emergency services confirmed on site that the drone carried a warhead. The explosive charge was detonated in a controlled manner at a prepared location on the morning of June 30, the ministry said.

According to preliminary findings, the drone came from a Russian attack on Ukrainian port infrastructure in April 2026 – that is, before Romania strengthened its air defenses following an earlier incident in the city of Galați. The prosecutor’s office at the Constanța Court of Appeal has launched an investigation.

Romania’s Defense Ministry noted that since the start of Russia’s war of aggression, Russia has attacked Ukrainian targets near the Romanian border more than 100 times. In addition, 29 violations of Romanian airspace have been recorded. As recently as late May, a Russian drone struck a residential building in Galați, injuring two people.
