Glover said the Alzheimer’s diagnosis was made several years ago. ‘I can live with it, in a way,’ the actor said, but expects his condition to change as the disease progresses. He reported that it already affects his mobility, speech, and memory. He relies mainly on his family: ‘They are there for me.’
Glover, who turns 80 on July 22, has appeared in more than 170 films and TV series. Steven Spielberg cast him in the 1985 Southern drama ‘The Color Purple.’ In the thriller ‘Witness,’ he played a corrupt police officer. In the blockbuster ‘Lethal Weapon’ franchise, he starred alongside Mel Gibson four times as a Los Angeles police detective hunting criminals.
Beyond his film work, Glover is an activist. He advocates for workers’ rights and serves as a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF. At the 2022 Governors Awards, he received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for his social engagement.
Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia. It involves the death of nerve cells in the brain, leading to forgetfulness, confusion, speech disorders, or disorientation. The ability to engage socially is often lost as well.
