The official teaser trailer for “Shrek 5” has already been clicked over three million times. But instead of anticipation, many feel frustration: they criticize the changed design of the female Fiona. In a video liked 1.4 million times on TikTok, one user asks: “Can someone explain to me why they took fat out of Fiona’s cheeks, gave her a new chin, operated on her nose, and retouched her collarbone?”
The original Fiona voluntarily chose the ogre appearance at the end of the fourth film – contrary to common beauty ideals. In the new trailer, however, she appears noticeably younger and slimmer, while Shrek has wrinkles, according to the criticism. “That is a clear indicator of where we stand as a society,” the user concludes.
Melvin Williams, associate professor of communication and media studies at Pace University in New York, sees no coincidence in this: “It is no surprise in this society that Fiona is portrayed significantly slimmer and more youthful in “Shrek 5.”” Shrek, on the other hand, enjoys “the gender-specific privilege of aging and gaining weight as an obese man.” The outlet has asked Universal and its subsidiary DreamWorks for a statement.
