NDR Children’s News: Premiere from a Classroom in Ahrensburg

Starting in July, Info's children's news program will be produced directly from classrooms across northern Germany – by and with children. The premiere takes place in Ahrensburg.

According to NDR, the broadcasts will be produced on four Saturdays in July together with students in their schools. The kickoff will be held by class 5e of the Stormarnschule in Ahrensburg (Schleswig-Holstein). The ten- to eleven-year-old children will interview each other on the topic of “social media and potential dangers” – from cyberbullying to WhatsApp and TikTok.

Normally, the editorial team selects two topics per week for the children’s news. This time, the children were allowed to propose a topic that particularly concerns them. “We try not only to explain the conflict but also to talk about empathy and what children can do when such news scares them,” explains Verena Hartges, deputy head of the Info newsroom.

In addition to production, media literacy is a focus: the children learn how a news broadcast is made, which sources are reliable, and how to recognize fake news. “Especially now, when children and young people are exposed to a lot of information every day, we think it is particularly important to strengthen them in this area,” says Janine Albrecht from the children’s audio editorial team, who came up with the idea for the format.

In July, NDR will broadcast from classrooms in Ahrensburg, Hamburg, Wedemark (Lower Saxony), and Malliß (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania). The broadcasts will also be available in sign language as usual.
