Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR) has reversed its decision: a new hip-hop station targeting a migrant audience will not be given the working title ‘1 Live Street’. The name had previously drawn widespread criticism for being perceived as discriminatory and racist.
The station was planned as a successor to the discontinued radio program ‘Cosmo’. Cosmo, known for its linguistic and cultural diversity, was cut as part of cost-saving measures. The new station was to focus on hip-hop – the name ‘1 Live Street’ sparked outrage.
WDR has now backtracked and announced that the station will receive a different name. A final decision on the future designation is still pending.
