Former US Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy are set to hold bilateral talks on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara on July 7-8, according to White House Deputy Press Anna Kelly.

The NATO summit in Ankara takes place on July 7-8. Alongside heads of state and government from alliance members, former US Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy are also expected to attend. Both plan a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the summit, as White House Deputy Press Anna Kelly announced. The meeting is scheduled for July 8.

A senior US official familiar with the matter said Trump and Zelenskyy would discuss how to end the war. Peace in Ukraine has long been a priority for the US president. The official noted that neither side has made significant progress at the front in recent months, while many people are dying and Russia and Ukraine continue to exchange long-range strikes. The official remarked that Trump feels a genuine need to end the war in Ukraine and that both Kyiv and Moscow have recognized the US president’s unique role as a mediator.

Earlier, President Zelenskyy himself announced his meeting with Donald Trump in Ankara. On July 4, the Ukrainian president spoke by phone with the US president to congratulate him on the 250th anniversary of US independence. The conversation also touched on the war in Ukraine. The politicians agreed to continue the discussion face-to-face in Ankara.
