Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival (SHMF) kicked off its 2026 edition on Saturday with a concert at the Lübeck Music and Congress Hall. Cellist Anastasia Kobekina and the Elbphilharmonie Orchestra under Karina Canellakis performed works by Dvořák and Mahler, according to NDR.

A second opening concert will be broadcast live on Sunday evening from 8:15 p.m. on the NDR livestream and on 3sat. The festival offers around 200 concerts at more than 70 venues across Schleswig-Holstein and runs until August 30.

This year, Stockholm is the festival’s focus. SHMF director Christian Kuhnt told NDR: “We really didn’t know much, and that’s partly why we engage with these metropolises. All the more fun to go on a journey of discovery together with our audience.” The program includes music by ABBA, Swedish trombonist Nils Landgren, and pop duo Roxette, who will perform in Kiel on July 18.

The festival’s portrait artist is Latvian accordionist Ksenija Sidorova. She will play 18 concerts this summer, including with Avi Avital and Fazıl Say. “For me, the accordion is a classical instrument,” Sidorova told NDR. “It comes from folk music, but it can show so much and has so many faces.”
