Germany's Defense Minister Boris Pistorius expects Russia could launch an attack on NATO territory before 2029, he said in an interview with Bild newspaper, as reported by 24tv.

Boris Pistorius (SPD) has warned of a possible Russian attack on NATO territory. In an interview with Bild newspaper, reported by 24tv, Pistorius said that Russia under Vladimir Putin could be capable of such a step by 2029 – even a limited attack against a NATO member.

Whether the Kremlin will actually attack is uncertain, Pistorius said. At the same time, he stressed that the Bundeswehr is significantly more combat-ready today than four years ago. From the end of 2027, around 4,800 German soldiers – mostly volunteers – are to be stationed in Lithuania for NATO defense. However, the minister acknowledged problems with troop strength: in individual cases, it may be necessary to conscript soldiers for certain posts – affecting fewer than a thousand people.

Pistorius also criticized the slow procurement processes and excessive technical requirements. “One of the main problems is that deliveries are not keeping pace with orders,” he said. Regarding Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, the minister expressed confidence: Ukraine is capable of winning the war and has already achieved significant successes – for example, through attacks on Russian logistics and refineries. The front line is relatively stable, but with high losses for Russia. Taurus cruise missiles are no longer Kyiv’s top priority; more important is reliable financing. Germany remains the largest donor in the EU aid package of 70 billion euros.
