On Monday, the expert commission presented its report on Berlin’s largest power outage since World War II at the Rotes Rathaus. The incident occurred in January and left around 100,000 people without electricity and heating for days. The outage was caused by a suspected far-left arson attack on a cable bridge in the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district.
Berlin’s Governing Mayor, Kai Wegner (CDU), had announced shortly after the incident that crisis management procedures needed to be reviewed. The expert commission, appointed by the Senate at the end of January, is now to issue recommendations for future protective measures.
Commission members include Heyo Kroemer, CEO of Charité, and Sigrid Nikutta, former railway manager. Berlin fire chief Albrecht Broemme and former Bundeswehr Brigadier Uwe Nerger are also part of the group.
The commission’s report will also address the need to better protect Berlin’s population from such events. The discussion on appropriate measures to prevent similar incidents in the future is at the center of the recommendations.
