Pope Leo XIV has appointed Christian Würtz, previously auxiliary bishop of Freiburg, as the new Bishop of Eichstätt. At 55, he is the youngest Catholic diocesan bishop in Germany. Würtz originally studied law and worked as a legal trainee before entering the priesthood, bringing extensive experience in pastoral care, priestly formation, and canon law.
Würtz succeeds Gregor Maria Hanke, who resigned early in June 2025.
