Chalil al-Haja is the new head of the Islamist organization, according to Hamas. The post was filled through an internal election within the terrorist group. Since Israel killed Sinwar in October 2024, Hamas had been led by a five-member leadership council, which included al-Haja. He also serves as a negotiator in talks for a permanent peace settlement in the Gaza Strip.
A ceasefire has been in place in the Gaza war since October 2025, but deadly attacks or confrontations continue to occur de facto.
