The most severe fire is raging near Taradeau in the Var department, according to authorities. More than 600 firefighters are on the scene. Fanned by wind, the flames spread rapidly toward the nearby town of Les Arcs-sur-Argens. In both locations, 150 people were evacuated. Several houses were destroyed. The fire was not yet under control as of last evening.
On Corsica, two fires have been keeping emergency crews busy for a week. They were sparked by lightning strikes. The fire near Albertacce has already destroyed more than 320 hectares. On Thursday, about 200 people were temporarily stranded on a popular hiking trail.
A fire in Fontainebleau south of Paris recently destroyed around 2,000 hectares of forest. The blaze was apparently triggered by sparks from road construction work. Wildfires have also flared up in Spain, Portugal, and Greece.
