The previously dependent Foundation Flight, Expulsion, Reconciliation is to operate independently in the future. The German government has approved a corresponding draft law to give the foundation greater importance and visibility. Independence will provide it with its own reliable financial base and enable it to better fulfill its important mission.
The foundation is being separated from the law establishing the German Historical Museum Foundation. Until now, it was under the authority of the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media. The Documentation Center Flight, Expulsion, Reconciliation opened in June 2021 in the former Deutschlandhaus at Anhalter Bahnhof in Berlin.
The foundation is dedicated to remembering flight and expulsion in the 20th century in Europe and beyond. It sees itself as a place of learning and remembrance for flight, expulsion, and forced migration – both historically and in the present. In December 2008, the German Bundestag passed the law establishing the German Historical Museum Foundation, which initially provided for the Foundation Flight, Expulsion, Reconciliation as a dependent institution.
